Mount Redoubt

Mount Redoubt is an active volcano that sits on the west side of the Cook Inlet. It has erupted five times since 1900, the last time in 2009 when it threw volcanic ash 45,000 feet into the air and coated 7,700 square miles with ash.

Here is a map of the area (as always, click to embiggen). We are currently in a campground in Soldotna, about 65 miles southwest of Anchorage, and 7 miles (as the crow flies) from the town of Kenai. Mount Redoubt is the left circle, and Kenai, 50 miles across the inlet, is the right circle.

We have been here for 4 days, and it has rained constantly for all of them. The first day we were here we made a trip to Kenai to see the Cook Inlet, and this is what we found:

Hard to believe that Mount Redoubt is out there, isn't it?

But the weather finally cleared today, so we went back. This is what we saw:

Beautiful mountain! The weather forecast goes downhill tomorrow -- more clouds and rain. But at least we got one great day to see this amazingly beautiful mountain.

Love the picture of the mountain with fireweed in the foreground! You saw Mt. Redoubt better than we ever did.
