Answer: They waited until winter when the lake was frozen and they could drive the tow vehicle on the lake. Yes, really.

Why go to all that trouble? What's the advantage of facing the lake? Why not just back it in so you can leave when you want or when you have to (even a permanent site might require abandonment)? Are you sure? I might have been a little skeptical but that's my nature.
We talked to one of the residents -- she said she wanted her patio area (a screened in "porch" on the door side of the rig) to face towards the long end of the lake, and the only way to do it that way was to face "in." Presumably, her neighbor did it for the same reason.
