The driving route through Rocky Mountain National Park is on the highest major highway in North America -- starting in forests, soon crossing the tree-line, and spending many miles traversing the tundra. It tops out at 12,183 feet, where the thin oxygen is noticeable with each breath, the vegetation and flowers are tiny and cling to the ground, and the snow still lies in cirques and crevices -- even at the end of July when the temperature in Castle Rock was pushing 100 degrees. And, when we returned, we saw the most beautiful sunset over Castle Rock and Lowes!
